An Epidemiological Study of Oral Hygiene Status in Patient with Chronic Renal Failure Who Receiving Hemodialysis

Abstract
For the patient with Chronic Renal Failure who receiving hemodialysis, the oral health is endangered by many systemic conditions. Hypertension, prolonged bleeding and clotting time, susceptibility to oral infection have led to poor oral conditions. In addition to this, the patient who has C.R.F. is less motive to oral health education than healthy person.
49 C.R.F. Patient, who have been visited to Yongsan Hospital of Chung-Ang University in Seoul for hemodialysis, January in 1991, were selected.
This study involve oral examination, that is, DMF index (Decayed, Missing, Filled), OHI (Oral Hygiene Index), s-OHI (simplified Oral Hygiene Index), the frequency of tooth brushing and oral epidemiology which is descriptive, analytic epidemiology.
The results were as follows;
1) DT (Decayed Tooth) index was 1.18, MT (Missing Tooth) index was 4.12, FT (Filled Tooth) index 1.96, IT
(Indicated for extraction) index was 0.16 in the patient with C.R.F.
2) Mean tooth brushing frequency was 1.36.
3) Debris index was 1.03, Calculus index was 0.57, Oral Hygiene Index was 1.60.
4) Simplified Debris Index was 0.57, simplified Calculus Index was 0.36, simplified Oral Hygiene Index was 0.93.
5) With increasing age, the frequency of tooth brushing decreases gradually.
6) With decreasing the frequency of tooth brushing, OHI, s-OHI decreases gradually, especially under 1/day-tooth brushing group.
7) For the oral health of the patient with C.R.F., it is necessary to educate tooth brushing method and to motivate the patient.
